Tom J Newell - dark art

I have always been a big lover of the style done by Tom J Newell. A base paint is layered, then sketched in pencil the outlines he would like to colour and then a simple Poco pen is used to draw. I adore his line work and I love how completely tattoo-like controlled it is. I see it a lot in and around sheffield because he does a lot of commissioned work - but I really would like to take inspiration from this.

I love his sketchbooks. I like that he uses a base colour for some designs and they're a different colour to the rest of the illustrations. I love this one particularly because I love that it's on a neutral colour. I like the way the black and white contrast and how it stands out.

This is based in the Harley, Sheffield. This huge wall fixture is something I adore - he collaborated with Millward, an illustrator that illustrates very much like Tom without the dark line's as much. The shape of the wall fixture is very Medieval Panel work because of the curve; central illustration and the flat bottom. I think that would be a very good final piece.
